Birth Injuries
Brain damage as a birth injury can also occur as a result of malpractice by the physician delivering the baby. This can happen before or during birth if the doctor does not identify a suspected case of brain damage, or does not do everything they can to help the mother have a healthy baby. If a physician uses a vacuum device or forceps while delivering a baby, they are taking the chance of damaging the child’s brain. These instruments should only be used when absolutely necessary, since they have been known to cause serious damage. An example of how an injury can occur is that a doctor may apply too much force while using a vacuum causing the nerves of the spinal cord to be stretched and torn more than they should.
While still in the womb, babies can suffer from a lack of blood or oxygen flowing to the brain. If this happens and it goes unidentified for too long a period of time, the chances of the baby having brain damage are increased. This is why it is recommended that expectant mothers undergo ultra sounds regularly to ensure that everything is going as expected with the baby. There are many types of brain damage that a child may suffer from. The most common and well-known form of brain damage is cerebral palsy, which is caused by damage to one part of the brain. This type of brain damage may be treated to make life easier for the child, but it is incurable. So far there is no type of brain damage that can be completely cured. There are only treatments and medications available to reduce any pain the child may experience.
